Gerber EAB (Exchange-A-Blade) Pocket Knife
What is it? A cheap pocket knife that utilizes disposable utility blades. In 2013 I paid $8.59 for it on Amazon. The same product appears to sell for $19.91 when I looked it up recently.
Why do I like it? I have always been a fan of EDC (every day carry), but even the smallest pocket knife never makes its way into my pocket consistently. I actually don’t carry a pocket knife, but I do keep one in my everyday backpack. That being said, this is the knife that I use the most for everyday tasks. Most of the time, that means breaking down Amazon boxes, but in any case it’s the one I tend to grab.
The Gerber EAB has an extremely small form factor and would be the knife I would carry around in my pocket. I like the idea of a quality knife, but the idea of sharpening and maintaining them is less attractive. The EAB utilizes standard utility blades; these blades are sharp and I can abuse them without worrying since I can just throw them away when they get dull. My current go-to utility blade is the Tajima V-Rex II Japanese tempered steel utility blades, and they are legit in your typical Japanese fashion.
For the price I paid for it, this is a disposable item (though I am still on the original one I bought in 2013). This is a distinct advantage over a quality pocket knife which is going to cost a lot more (and cause a lot more heartburn if you ever lose it). It’s somewhat of a harder proposition at $20 as it’s essentially a utility blade “holder.”
What don’t I like? I don’t like the screw-in locking mechanism which is a minor annoyance when removing and locking the blade in. I would have preferred a self-locking mechanism with a quick-release of some sort, but again, it’s really hard to complain about it for something that cost me less than $10.
Do I want to upgrade? Not really. This thing is cheap and I use it almost daily. Anything nicer is a less-attractive value proposition for me without adding much additional utility. Again, I’m not a knife enthusiast or connoisseur.
Conclusion A great pocket knife with great value at less than $10. Not so much at the $20 price point. Great durability and functionality.
